Rediscovering Connection - Supporting Families in Care Homes
Facilitating a session for families visiting loved ones in care homes, I often hear the same emotions - sadness, guilt, and a deep longing for connection. As conversation becomes harder, visits can feel strained or even avoided.
One woman shared how a walk through the care home garden transformed a visit with her mother. As they explored the flowers together, her mother came alive - naming plants, sharing favourites, smiling. “In that moment,” the daughter said, “I felt like I had my mum back.”
That story stayed with me. It showed how reconnecting doesn’t always mean conversation - it can be shared attention, familiar surroundings, or gentle activity. By creating new ways to connect, families can rediscover joy, even within change.
