Finding Clarity, Calm, and Connection in Dementia and Later Life
Starting a new blog always feels a little like opening the door to a new conversation. If you’ve found your way here, you might be living with dementia yourself, supporting a loved one, or working within care. You might also be navigating the changes that later life can bring - retirement, moving home, or adjusting to new routines. Whoever you are, welcome.
For nearly two decades, I’ve worked as an Occupational Therapist in the NHS and beyond, specialising in dementia care and supporting older people. What I’ve learned is that life doesn’t stop with a diagnosis or a transition - but it can feel uncertain, overwhelming, or lonely. What makes the difference is finding the right support at the right time.
Why I Do This Work
When I first began working in dementia care, I was struck by the strength, resilience, and creativity of the people I met. But I was also struck by how often they and their families felt left to manage on their own. Over time, I realised that my role wasn’t just about offering advice or strategies - it was about listening carefully, creating space for people’s own voices, and helping them rediscover clarity, calm, and connection in the midst of change.
Support for Families and Individuals
A dementia diagnosis can feel like the ground has shifted beneath you. For individuals, everyday routines may suddenly feel harder, and worries can creep in. For families, there are new questions, responsibilities, and emotions to manage. My work offers practical and emotional support - from building confidence at home, to planning ahead without feeling overwhelmed, to simply having a safe space to talk.
Supporting Care Providers and Organisations
Care providers often tell me they want to do more than meet basic needs - they want to support people to live well. That’s where training and consultancy come in. I help staff feel equipped and confident, offering practical strategies that make a real difference to residents and families. It’s about moving from “good enough” care to care that’s truly person-centred and empowering.
Later Life Transitions
Not all of my work is dementia-specific. Later life brings its own challenges and opportunities, and I support older people who may not have a diagnosis but are adjusting to change - retirement, moving home, or health shifts. Together, we explore what matters most, rebuild confidence, and create new routines that feel meaningful and sustainable.
Looking Ahead
Through this blog, I’ll be sharing ideas, reflections, and resources to help individuals, families, and organisations. My aim is simple: to make life feel a little clearer, calmer, and more connected, even in the face of change.
